All About LaStone Therapy

In August of 1993, Mary Hannigan, founder of the acclaimed LaStone Therapy, had an epiphany.  During her time in a sauna, she was told to use a massage stone.  Of course, at the time the idea was not popular in the U.S., but she decided to follow the voice anyway.  She picked up the stone and massaged it into her niece’s back.  The sensation was so wonderful, Hannigan knew she had to try the technique with her other clients.
From that point forward, the LaStone Therapy was born.  With this technique, hot and cold massage stones are used to free pressure points or chakras on the body.  Physically, the result  increased blood circulation, reduced pain and inhibited swelling.  Psychologically, LaStone Therapy puts the client at ease.  When the massage is finished, they feel completely invigorated.
What type of massage stones are used during LaStone Therapy?  The most common ones are made of basalt, though sometimes marble is also used.  There are even individuals that will collect their own massage stones.  However, if one goes this route, they need to really know what they are doing, since not all stones will provide an appropriate feel.  They may also not heat up well. For this reason, many massage therapists prefer buying massage stones from an established company.
So, how can a massage therapist get started with LaStone Therapy? Their best bet is to get a LaStone certification.  Four are available: Therapist LST, Advanced therapist ALST, Master Therapist MLST and Master Therapist Instructor MLST-I.  Only a few dozen people around the world have some of the more advanced certifications offered for LaStone Therapy.  Their names are listed on the LaStone website.
In conclusion, thanks to Mary Hannigan, modern-day Americans get an opportunity to enjoy the massages of the ancients.  In the process, they renew their mind and spirit while relieving any physical conditions that might be ailing them
